Whoever told you this is mistaken. A data DVD is a great idea for storing data. If you want to watch mpegs on your dvd player, ps2... whatever... you have to make a dvd video.

As stated before, start with the guides on the left. Good luck!

  5. TMPGEnc Plus or TMPGEnc Xpress and TMPGEnc DVD Author will get you going.

Guides are what you need to be looking at but I'll give you a slight starter tip.

You basically need to convert any video files into DVD (MPEG 2) files and then use an authoring tool to build DVD Video Files, then you can burn the DVD files using Nero and all should play fine.

There are a few DVD players that will play a MPEG from a DVD data disc. But the MPEG would likely still have to be close to or the same as the DVD MPEG specification and format to work. The DVD format is shown in 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page. <<<<<<

If you want to try something easy for beginners, look at ConvertXToDVD. You should be able to drop your MPEGs in there and do the conversion to DVD compliant format. Otherwise, you need to encode to, or start with a DVD compliant MPEG-2, then author it to DVD format before burning.

    And welcome to our forums.

Most likely you had PAL (European) video and you didn't specify to convert it to NTSC (US and others). PAL has a 25fps framerate, while NTSC has a 23.976 or 29.97fps framerate. ConvertX can handle most framerate changes, but they can be complex at times. Computers can play either one and you wouldn't notice, but settop players are more picky.

If you have a unknown video, it pays to drop it into Gspot 2.60 before converting to avoid surprises.

And the average 700MB Xvid from the net converts to about a 1.5GB DVD, so you could often put two of them on a DVD, if you wanted.

The bitrate and audio format you choose will determine the final file size,it dont matter what size the source file was.You can use the Videohelp Bitrate Calculator to decide on what bitrate you can use to fit the video contents onto your blank DVD media.

If you use AC3 as the audio format instead of LPCM then it will lower the final filesize.
