Recently upgraded from vegas 5 and I know at some point in the not too distant past, I was able to drop an avi file in vegas and i could preview the playback in the media window.

Now in Vegas 7, i just cant seem to be able to do it! Is it a glitch or more probably, me?? I know-more than likely me!!! I have read and read the manual but i cant seem to find any reference to avi's. It is fine when previewing mpg-not a problem at all with them.

    Any help would be grateful.

    Many Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. 50 types!!!

Was referring to a 'basic' avi with audio and video only. At a loss as to describe what you mean by 'what kind?' Sorry. Tried stripping out the individual streams with vdub and putting them in but still no preview.

AVI is a container. The video and audio content are defined by the codec used to encode them. Programs like avicodec and g-spot can tell you what is actually in the container.

To clarify your problem - you can't see a preview when you put this avi on the timeline, or just when you highlight it in the explorer window ?

File is an episode of Prison Break and according to Gspot, video codec is xvid ( XviD 1.1 beta 1); audio irrelevant as i can sort that.

As for preview; when i drop it on the timeline i cannot preview it even when 'autopreview' is on. It seems totally fine with any and all mpegs but for some reason not avi.

    Any help would be grateful.

for some reason not Xvid would be more accurate, unless you have tried other avis encoded with other codecs.

Do you have the latest Xvid installed ? Vegas doesn't carry all the codecs around with it. You need to have it installed on your system.

The file is watchable with any media player I have on my pc-so the appropriate codec is there and Gspot confirms relevant codecs are installed. Not sure if i need to drag and drop these into vegas to enable the preview as it may be only trying to pick its OWN codecs for playback.

It doesn't. I am still using 6, but preview hasn't changed for a few versions. Have you enabled auto-preview in the explorer window ? I don't (and have never had to) drag and drop a video anywhere in Vegas to get a preview. If I have auto-preview enabled then just clicking the file is neough to watch it in the preview window. If it isn't enabled then there is a preview play button to use.

    Hi

autopreview is enabled and tried turning it on and off; restarting app and just pressing the play button-all with no joy!

I don't (and have never had to) drag and drop a video anywhere in Vegas to get a preview.
No, i meant drag and drop codecs if it was only using its own codecs; not the file. Once as built peaks and i place it onto the timeline it should usually play with autopreview in the window but it does not. A bit stumped on this.

  10. I too had this problem with getting Divx/Xvid video to even load on the timeline in Vegas. Turned out the reason was that I had both Xvid and Divx codecs on my machine. Maybe you can try to uninstall one or the other if you have both on your machine.

vegas will use the divx codec only for decoding xvid ... sometime you have to change the 4CC to divx also (not always)

no such thing as a basic avi

The solutions for this problem with XVID and Vegas, were suggested before by BJ_M, Cunhambebe and others.
First uninstal the XVID codec from your machine. That alone worked for me (with Vegas 6).
If you still cannot load your xvid avi in Vegas, try what BJ_M suggests and change the 4CC to divx.
You could find the further reading on this issue if you search through previous topics on the forum.
