I have a screensaver that I would like to convert to avi so that it can be used as a background on some dvd menus. I found a previous discussion on this and one idea was to use "snagit" to capture it. Is there a better way? thanks

I failed to mention that the screensaver is animated(movie) with sound. Maybe that makes a difference.

    Look under tools, Desktop/screen captures.

Is it an actual digitized video? Can you tell whether or not it's a Flash video, in that case? (If it's a Flash movie (but not SFV), you're probably better off capturing it, anyway.)

Heh, quite a few screensavers are animated with sound. (dodges tomatoes)

  7. Greetings:

I have the same interest to convert scr file to avi, mpeg, mwv format, so I can understand.

1). I have a sotware screenmaker 3d. It produce beautiful 3d cubes with photos that rotate etc as well as produced 3d tex which is aniumated. But it is saved in scr file.

2). The object is to get that scr file into a video editor like movie maker, or roxio of video wave or which ever video editing program or maker that one has. Normally, they will take avi, mpeg mwv, rm, to name but a few of the major foprmats.

3). Now as for the screen capture software, I have used several and maybe not a mush as others, however I have found that for capturing screen shots they are excellent quality. Howeverever when it comes to capturing movements such as scr file or other movie images (Not still shots) the results are not as sharp and clear. There are patches like water on the outcome.

4). Even by tampering with your harware excellerator during the capturing with the screen captures software, the quality is not as should be expected.

5). There shold be somewhere outthere a software taht actually accepts the scr file and then coinverts it into a selected number of roermats that one wants to use. This would bring about a clearer output file and this file then you could put into any of the video editing or video creation programs together with whatever slide or movie you wish to creat.

So, yes tehre are screen captures outtehre but unless you can find one that will provide excekllent quality from the movie scr images taht you are tryiong to capture, we must locate a proper conversion software. I have searched for all combinations of the words scr conversion to avi, mpeg, but every time I come up with a hit, the sofwtare only creats scr files. It does not convert!.

So if there is anyone out there who might have knowledge and a reply for this post, could you kindly help out here.

    Thanks.

You are never going to get great quality trying to screen-cap screensavers. Most screen cap programs just aren't built for full frame, full frame rate capture. Many screen savers also put a lot of load on the system, depending on what they actually do. The example of the 3D cube - it may not be a video, but done live in realtime. This means a good load on the CPU, and also, no resource to extract because the scr doesn't actually contain the video, just the code to retoate a mapped cube in 3D.
