How are subtitlese created from scratch. Is there some voice recognition software that can create subtitles when none exist, without having to manually type them in??

As far as I can recall , there is only two good products for voice recognition , one being dragon naturally speaking by ibm , easy to get a hold of , and philips free speech , almost need to go directly to purchase it .

Both are commercial products , both require extensive voice training ... philips free speech win's hands down , esspecially when it come's to strong accents .

As for creating them from new , aegisub , visualSubSync (better) ... then you might need supporting tools such as :

    Subtitle Workshop
    SubToSup
    Txt2Sup
    Subtitle Processor
    Subrip
    SubMagic
    Sub2DivX
    srt2sup
    DVDSubber

To get you started : visualSubSync

Then you get into the weird world of alignment placement ... guide for that before year end .
