I recently downloaded some XVID AVI files and they seem to be extremely dark. Is there any way to brighten them up before I convert to DVD????

Be careful not to lighten them up too much.
Video generally shows up darker on a computer monitor than it will on a TV screen. In VirtualDub, select: 'Video>Filters>Add>brightness/contrast'. You can check the result in 'File>Preview filtered.'
You will have to re-encode them with this method. Or if you use a encoder like TMPGEnc, you can frameserve the edited version direct to the MPEG-2 encoder without saving. Of course, with an encoder like TMPGEnc, you can lighten them there, instead, and save a step.
And welcome to our forums. -
I downloaded the VirtualDUB program, but when I try to open the video file it gives this error
"Couldn't locate defompressor for forman 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDUB requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
I tried searching for something but came up with nothing. Any ideas where to get what I need??? Thanks for all the help Baldrick & redwudz -
