Using mainconcept (adobe) it took over 4 hours to transcode about half an hour of DV footage, after I had capped it to the HD. Is this about how long it takes? are their programs that are faster, I did 2 pass progressive. So is this just how long it takes? or can it be faster with the same quality results?

P.S. Almost forgot the most important part, I'm on a 2.0ghz pentium M, 1gb RAM

Sounds a bit too long - I'd expected half that. CCE is the fastest encoder around.

Unless you are doing massive filtering, your system should be able to give you 1X speed. So two passes times 30 minutes should have only taken you 1 hour.
You also did a progressive encode. Are you sure that your DV is progressive?ICBM target coordinates:
