Hi, yesterday I bought a Philips PET 1200 portable DVD player. Everything looked good and I managed to change the region coding to 0 using the hack on this forum (seem to have avoided the problem some people had with the hack not working on early versions of the unit - mine was manufactured in June 2006 so definately a newer revision). Can now play all of our PAL and NTSC DVDs from around the world - wonderful.

Now the only problem I have is with the screen and I wanted to get some feedback on this. When the screen is displaying black (or dark scenes) there is a vertical band around 5mm wide at the extreme left hand edge of the screen that is clearly lighter than the rest of the screen. This band gets lighter the further left and is a little irritating when watching a dark movie (such as Jurassic Park), being at the periphery of the display and quite visible.

In addition to this band, there is also some other light areas, the shape of which I can only describe as cloud like. These light areas are around the bottom right of the screen but are quite large, around say 2 to 3cm in size.

There is also ONE dead pixel (I know that this is normal and it doesn't bother me).

Are these screen inconsistent contrast issues normal for this unit and/or portable DVD players? Or should I take it back and get it replaced?

Much appreciate any help with this.

  2. I've seen something like this happen on one brand of portable DVD players.

    Changing the screen corrects it.

Most likely thing is leakage of the backlight throughthe sdie of the screen.

Take it back or live with it, your choice. My guess is that it is a manufacturing defect and may get worse over time. At a minimum go look at the display model and see if it has the same problem. If so you might want to change brands/model.

Thanks TBoneit - I think I'll get it replaced first. Hopefully it's a one off problem as I've read a lot of positive comments regarding the screen on this model.
