Why Windows can't read DVD-RW file system ?

Hi,

I have problem with my DVD files burnt on DVD-RW. I recorded some TV programmes using DVD recorder then burnt DVD from that recorder. I used DVD-RW from imation encore white series (4.7GB).


To save space, I determined to convert those DVD files to VCD files. I used TSUNAMI MPEG DVD EasyPack Suite, Clone DVD & SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621 (configured as IDE slave) to do this. Conversion was successful. I could play back the VCD files.


As I have another PC (called it PC2) configured with LG4167B DVD drive & I had a lot of files to convert, I determined to speed up the process my doing conversion in both PCs. The problem came out as I found Windows explorer in PC2 couldn't read out file system of the DVD --- no VIDEO_RM, VIDEO_TS directories found, as if no DVD disc had been inserted into the drive. However, PowerDVD & NERO player softwares installed in PC2 could play all video files burnt on the disc.


I wonder why explorer in PC2 couldn't read the disc file system but applications there could read out the DVD's content ? No such problem found in the other PC with ONY DVD-ROM DDU1621 connected.


What should I do to correct this problem ?

Maybe the folders are just 'hidden' and you don't have configured your 'PC2' explorer to show 'all files' (including system, read only...)

Maybe you didn't close the DVD, IE Finalize it. Different PCs = different software installed = different capabilities.

I don't understand what you mean by closing DVD & IE finalization. The DVD was burnt by DVD recorder. I just used Windows explorer to try read the DVD content.

I'd also tried to use CloneDVD & TSUNAMI MPEG DVD Easypack Launcher. Both of them couldn't read the DVD's content (i.e. they treated the DVD an empty DVD).

Finalizing makes the DVD into a format that can be read on most drives. Until the disc is finalized you can go back and add content, after finalizing the recorder will create the proper structure so most drives can read it. Without finalizing in many cases only the recorder can read the disc.

OF course as was also suggested above if in VR mode that is another problem.

You say the software treated it as a empty disc? sounds like it needs finalizing.

I didn't know what you mean. I used time recording. The recorder provided below options:

1. Source: TV channel;
2. Recording tO : HD or DVD, I choosed HD;
3. Quality: HQ, SP, SP+, LP, EP or SLP, I choosed SP;
4. Mode: Once, Daily, Weekly, etc, I choosed Once;
5. Date, start & end time of recording, title of result recorded programme (irrevalent);
6. PDC: I didn't make any change, it's OFF;
7. NICAM: I choosed CURRENT.

Also, the recorder allowed pressing one button to copy selected recorder programme to DVD disc on DVD drive.

Furthermore, as mentioned before, I had 2 PCs, one with old SONY DVD drive and one with suspected problematic LG DVD drive. Only the LG drive had this problem. I wonder if your mentioned UDF software could solve this problem.

Most recorders when you first format the disc, will give you the option of formatting in Video mode or VR mode. Video mode is the standard DVD format that all players use; VR mode allows editing and maybe some thumbnail images (but it isn't compatible with most players). If there's a chance it was recorded in VR mode, just install some sort of UDF reading software (such as Nero InCD, Roxio Drag-n-Drop, etc.) and see if it works then.

I could read directories & files from Windows Explorer in another PC configured with SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621. If finalizing was the reason, why inconsistent results found with SONY & LG DVD drives ? I said 'empty' because when I double clicked on DVD drive icon from PC2 Windows Explorer, nothing (subdirectories or files) appeared under DVD drive icon. Yet explorer didn't complained the DVD disc was unformatted. Oops I just re-read one DVD in my SONY drive, the label of the disc was DVD_VR with 2 directories named VIDEO_RM & VIDEO_TS. Did the label mean VR mode being used by DVD recorder ?

Obviously, this DVD disc was not finalized. But will the problem be solved after finalization ? What computer application could help me finalize the disc ? My DVD recorder didn't has any option setting about finalization.

PS: Everytime I burnt CD or DVD data disc, I didn't force finalizing the disc until NERO told me to do so because the content to burn on disc nearly fill up the disc. However, I didn't meet any problem reading these disc with the LG drive, why ?

Yes I'd read through the whole DVD recorder manual, it said nothing about how to finalize DVD disc burnt.

The "Setup Menu - Recording" of my DVD recorder has below settings:

Current setting marked with '*'

1. Auto Chap Mark: 5min./10min./20min./30min./Off*
2. Record Quality: HQ/SP*/SP+/LP/SLP
3. APS: SCAN*
4. Modify Channel: EDIT* (allows change of Program Number, Channel
Name, Standard e.g. 5. PAL,NTSC & other TV channel settings)
6. Program Table: SORT* (list all scanned TV channels for sorting in
order)
7. Timer Setting Menu: OK* (Pressing OK switched to Timer Recording
setup menu)
8. Contry Selection:

No setting seemed relevant.

Usually I recorded TV programmes to HDD of the DVD recorder. To copy HDD content to DVD disc, I need two steps:

1. Select files to add to disc from list via remote control;
2. Press Dub button on remote control to start DVD burning.

Throughout the process, recorder didn't prompt me to do any finalization on the disc.

Actually, the recorder allowed direct recording to DVD. So I changed the setting and repeated the recording process. As expected, the burnt disc was not finalized.

I tried reporting case to DVD recorder vendor via the web site. For unknown reason, I couldn't sent them message via their provide message board page http://www.soman.net/CASE/JK/en/book_write.asp.

Besides, I also reported case to LG local dealer via e-mail. I'm still waiting for their reply.

The problem with an open disc is you may be able to read it in your recorder as I can in my Pioneer. However if others want to watch it elsewhere they are usually out of luck so you couldn't send a family movie on disc even and what do you do when your recorder dies?

When I finish reecording anything on either of my two recorders it will ask whether I want to Finalize or not. If I plan to add another session to the same disk I chose no. If I want to take it upstairs to my TV DVD player I choose yes.

Enven burning programs have that finalizing feature. In Nero Burning Rom, if you choose Multi session, it wil not finalize. If you don't it will.

Bingo! I found the finalize option from the indistinct DVD recorder menu. I finalized the DVD from there. When I put the finalized DVD disc to LG DVD drive, Window XP explorer could finally read its directory tree and all files (e.g. .VOB) underneath.

Glad to hear you solved your problem. Don't you just love it when every needed function is clearly marked, easy to find and intuitive in operation.

My limited understanding is that when you finalize a DVD it creates the directory structure so Windows and DVD players can find the files. A DVD recorder knows where it puts the files on a unfinalized disc and can find them so when you use the recorder it can play the disc.
