are you editing the mpg? or wmv but virtualdub doesn't support wmv...

WMV often uses variable bitrate audio. This can cause sync problems when converted. It may also have VBR video. If you are able to convert the audio to constant bitrate audio, that may help to fix the sync problems. Unfortunately, not a lot of non-MS programs handle WMV very well. You could drop it into WMM and maybe save it out as DV, then do your conversions to Xvid. WinAVI has more problems than solutions, so I won't use it for much of anything.

I convert it to MPEG with no problems then i edit it with Virtualdub, but the result is an AVI file with Sync problems, can i just save the "cut edition" in MPEG form with virtualdub??

mpeg is not a format meant for editing. Why not edit your WMV in Windows Movie Maker first, output as DV avi, then convert ?
