  2. They play as Flash format, but I don't know how they get uploaded or where the conversion takes place. Unlike other Flash media (which can be downloaded with a Firefox plug-in) the YouTube files are 9at least for me) immune to saving. A video screen capture app would work (like SnapPro on the Mac), but perhaps there is another method.

If you haven't already installed firefox, go to
    http://www.getfirefox.com
and install Firefox. Then go to
    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/
and install the VideoDownloader add-on. No guarantees it will work on every file, but the few times I tried it with YouTube it did download the files I was watching. One of my friends tried it and said it failed for him, but he's not very strong technically, so I can't rule out that he didn't use it correctly.

So far, greasemonkey has worked for youtube without any issues. The greasemonkey page will point you to the scripts you need.

A simpler solution is the Unplug plugin, which you call from the tools menu as needed. It finds all video related links on the page, and ranks them in the most likely order. Works across a range of pages.

A couple web links will (sometimes) capture the vids:

    http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

    http://keepvid.com/

You'll need FLV Viewer to play them

    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28763

or iSquint to convert them to something useful:
