I have a MKV video with english audio and subtitles. I want to add original (jap) audio. But when I convert it to avi it loses subtitles. (Using River past). Can someone help me?

you can add another audio track to the mkv using mkvtoolnix.

or extract the subtitle from the mkv with mkvextractgui and add to the avi with virtualdubmod if you want permanent subs.

  3. If you have the DivX codec another possibility could be creating an avi using the .divx container with the subs in it - that way you'd have an avi file (essentially) with switchable subs rather than permanent ones.

You could extract the subs using mkvextractgui, then convert your video to avi if necessary. Then you'd use a tool like Sub2Divx to convert your text subs to graphical subs, and then DivxMuxGui to mux the subs with your video (you can also do the muxing with Sub2Divx but it can be a little buggy - just check the option in settings to NOT delete the subtitles when it's done and you can use the subs in DivXMuxGUI).

The advantage to doing this is you get switchable subtitles in the color/font/size you want.
