Someone has just sent me two avi files, one plays fine in windows media player, the other comes up with an error saying the required codec cannot be found. It suggests a website to try for the codec, but how do i find out which codec i need for this particular avi file to play it? thanks :)

Use Gspot to decide which codec you require. It will also tell you if you already have a codec available.

I've used G-spot and it says the codec is MP43, and it says it is already installed. So i tried opening the avi file again, in both Windows Media and PowerDVD and neither will play it. What am i doing wrong here?

It may need a specific codec version. Try here: http://www.movavi.com/codec/mp43.html It appears MS doesn't support it anymore. I would try VLC first.
