Data CD's and Audio(Music) CD's.

After all of these years...has anyone written software
for a computer that can "convert" regular CD-R's to
work in CD Recorders that require Music CD-R's?

SURELY it must have crossed someone's mind......right?

Definitely not possible. The only difference between a data cdr and a music cdr is that the disc application code for a music cdr is set to unrestricted while the disc application code for a data cdr is set to general use (aka everything but music recorders.) The code is set in the wobble track which stores data using frequency modulation encoding rather than standard cd encoding. So CDR recorders cannot even burn this type of info, and even if you had the hardware to do it, it has to be preburnt before the disc is even manufactured so you are not going to be able to modify any disc that you find in stores.

There are ways to trick certain hardware recorders into accepting general use cdrs though. The universal trick is to swap out the music cdr with a general use one just before it starts recording. Doesn't work on most units and its probably not great for your hardware. Other than that you have to modify the recorder itself to accept general use cdrs.

Some countries have a MUCH higher price on Music CD-R's than others. That and the fact that they are not that easily obtainable anymore....and the fact that the higher price paid goes directly to the RIAA....motivation indeed.

Never had a standalone to try this but i hear it works on some machines.

The CD swap trick !
Insert "music" CD into machine. Put it into pause / record mode.
Open CD tray
Insert normal CR-R
Hit pause to release machine to record.

May work. Worth a try.

Ahhh! Motivation indeed! Money and screwing the RIAA... two things close to my heart. Well, you can always try this. Get some music RWs and reuse them. You you can make your digital recordings on your standalone using RWs and then copy them on your PC. Then just reuse the RWs.

I actually hardly EVER use my Philips CD Recorder that I have here....but I left a Pioneer CD Recorder with my father that he uses quite often.
I'd love to experiment with the Philips to see if it is possible......maybe someday (while my wife is not home) I'll "play" with the Philips...mechanically that is...

Actually none of the money from the music cdr royalties goes to the RIAA at all. It is distributed directly from an independant royalty board to the labels and then to the artists. Its heavily regulated so there really is no middle man collecting a fee. It all goes to the artists.
