I've been using my Philips DVP642 to play MP3 music mixes burned on CD-Rs. I notice it locks up on perhaps 70% of the songs.... it will just freeze, and either I have to wait a few minutes or unplug it to get control back.
My last DVP642 (which broke due to the door jamming) did the same thing. WTF is the deal with these players? Do they have a problem with weird bit rates or VBR audio? My other DVD players have never given me this kind of trouble.

The DVP-642 is too fussy about a lot of stuff. VBR audio is ALWAYS a bad idea. You are just asking for problems. The space savings are minor and since there is always a non-zero chance that something will barf on VBR, why use it and just ask for problems? I NEVER use VBR audio just because it sometimes causes problems with playback devices. I'm not sure what you mean by weird bit rates, but I suppose if you somehow are using something that's not a multiple of 32 like 205, yes that might indeed be a problem.
