So I used VirtualDub 1.6.16 to crop out a little bit at the beginning and at the end of a 98 MB home video in .avi format. When I save the resulting video it is 1.2 GB.
Here's precisely what I did: I selected the portions I wanted to delete using the Home and End keys and deleted them. I then saved the result with the "Save as .AVI" option.
I know squat about video editing... or anything video related actualy. I am guessing that the original file is compressed and the resulting one isn't but how to fix this, not a clue.

So how do I end up with a reasonable sized file? Help greatly apreciated.

Use video->direct stream copy and audio->direct stream copy and you wont reencode the video to uncompressed format.

You forgot to specify a compression codec, so VD gave you the default 'Uncompressed RGB', which will give you a huge file. Just set the compression from one of the codecs in the list. I would use the same codec as the original.

But if you are just doing simple editing, save it out as a 'Direct stream copy' and it should be the same as the original, minus the cuts. This is also very fast as no re-encoding is involved. But you would need to make your cuts on a keyframe, or you would have to re-encode at least the parts where you made your cuts. Keyframes are automatically jumped to by the little key symbols.

The problem is, some codecs like Xvid, Divx only have a keyframe every 300 frames by default. So that's as fine as a cut that you can make without re-encoding. 300 frames at 29.97fps and you see the problem. The DV codec has every frame as a keyframe. Very nice to edit.
