I finally figured out what I need to get an unlimited storage mp3 player. There is something called a USB HOST mp3 player. It is capable of reading files off of a usb harddrive. I'd love to be able to find a cheap 30-50 dollar unit. The actual capacity of the unit is irrelevant. I want to get a usb enclosure device so I can plug in any size harddrive I want. Then I'd be able to load an essentially limitless number of mp3s.

I figure if I can get a cheap enough usb host capable mp3 player I can do this for probably under a $100. $30 or so for the player, maybe $20 for the enclosure, and $20-$30 for the harddrive after rebates.

So does anyone know of a list of commercially available host players???

Hey anyone have an idea on this one? Is this doable? Can a usb host mp3 player drive a usb harddrive and stream mp3's off of it??

Well I found a go video mp3 player that has 5gb of space and looks to be playforsure compatible for $70 at compusa. As long as it is playforsure compatible I think I might just buy that and sell my iriver and forget the whole adapter business....

    one unit is simpler

EDIT - I think I will be buying this over the weekend. It is playforsure compatible and has an FM TUNER, can record fm and has voice recording.

My iriver doesn't have fm so this is a step up beyond the storage space. I think for $70 I'm sold. And if I could get $40 maybe on ebay for my 1gb iriver I could pay for part of my new mp3 player I'm going to get

    Um... no apple thank you

Nope I figure that go video looks good for $70 for a 5gb model - plus it has an fm tuner and recorder - something you can't get on an ipod

Plus with the money I'll save on this new mp3 player I'll still be able to get a nintendo wii

well I went to compusa today. The darn go video mp3 player was web only - apparently its a discontinued item.

    Back to the drawing board.

Who knows - maybe I'll look into getting a broken ipod on ebay and read up on how to fix it..........

    or not........

Well I ended up buying the go video mp3 player on ebay. There was an auction for $50 buy it now with $5 shipping. And its new in box So I saved $15 plus whatever compusa would have charged for shipping. Its ups ground so if they ship Monday I'll probably get it by Friday.

This does windows drm wma files so I will be able to use Yahoo music with it. It does have fm and fm recording so that will be a nice feature to have. I can listen to the radio for awhile and then play an mp3 or two when the commercials come!

Oh. Thanks for the link conquest10. I'm all for good causes but I am still not doing Apple.

Besides I found out that most if not all ipods are firewire not usb. I don't have a firewire card on my pc and I'd have to spend an extra $10-$40 or whatever they cost to get one. This way I'm happy with the go video mp3 player I'm going to get.

Not true at all. Early iPods came with a Firewire cable as Macs usually had only USB 1.1 (which is slow) but had Firewire. You could buy a USB cable for them to use on PCs. Now, Macs also come with USB 2.0 so that is what iPods come with. I don't think they use Firewire anymore.
