I have a Diamond Digital DVDXRW1248-061 drive running XP on 2.8G AMD with 512MB ram.

When I burns cd's and DVD’s even at its slowest speed and play them back they skip or have errors.

When you look in the bios and windows device manager the dive is only identified as an ATPI DVD RW rather then Diamond Digital DVD RW drive.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive and can't find a updated firmware for this drive. I have also tried quite a few different brands of media including Verbatim.

I've been told that because the drive hasn't been identified properly in the bios and windows that this could be the cause of the problems I'm having?

If so what can I do to rectify the problem?

try deleting the channel with the drive and then restart windows so it can reinstall the channle along with the drive.

I haven't had one not be identified properly, but that shouldn't affect the burning. From your model, that drive is from Mitsubishi. http://www.mitsubishi-electric.com.au/PRODUCTS/COMPP/dvd/

You might try changing your IDE cable. Make sure it's an 80 conductor. Also make sure your DVD drive jumper settings are correct.

    Here's a list of suggest media: http://www.mitsubishi-electric.com.au/files/dvd/media/Media_listDVDXRW1248.pdf

I don't know if there is any updated firmware out there, but that's not likely your problem anyway.
