I was wondering - could you gut an old gameboy and put a portable harddrive and linux on it?

Could you make your own gamepod????

On the other end of the spectrum, they've gotten an MP3 player to run Gameboy games.

Also, it's kinda already been done.

Thanks supreme2k. I had done some more yahooing and found another similar device that will adapt sd memory cards for the gameboy advanced. I only had a gameboy color so I went to eb games today and bought a gba (1st gen no backlit no flip top) for $25 I'm gonna try to get the adapter on ebay for around $20 plus shipping.

It can do mp3 and even videos - but the video have to be in gameboy format and it includes conversion software. Oh yeah it plays homemade games too.......

And now I have a spare gameboy color to toy with I ever decide to crack it open and look for away to modify it myself

This is something like I'm thinking of doing. The guy soldered a mp3 compact flash player card for a nintendo ds to a 40 gb laptop harddrive!!! So the thing can play anything of any length now.

What I would like is some way to hook up a gameboy to a portable usb harddrive. If I could do that then I could just put the gameboy and harddrive in a pack of some kind and have my own custom video/mp3 player with no limit! You could go as high as you wanted. With that info you could add a 750gb harddrive to a nintendo ds!

    Very interesting...

But it soon becomes a "I do/did it because I can" vs. it being practical, affordable or useful.

Hell, I've seen MP3 players made out of Altoid tins, so altering a gameboy case should be no problem (may not be as pretty, though)..

    ...
    indeed!
look at the picture you posted yoda -- isn't the whole point of mp3 players the portable aspect?
i sure as hell wouldn't want to lug that contraption around.

What I'm looking to try to do is to get a usb adapter to hook a harddrive to a standard gba. That way its only the size of a paperback book and could literally be any capacity I want it to be.....

As long as the monetary investment is near nil the entertainment value of "because I can" can make it very worth while.

I recall making a telephone system out of two old phones, a run of wire and a 9-volt... A lot of fun for my 5 year old an I but really of no other use.

    what about a power source?
I don't think you can run the whole thing off proprietary battery pack that's in a GBA. I believe it's only 2.5 or 3.0 volts.
