Right now i have divx 6.25 codec installed. Should I install divx 5 instead for encoding in virtualdub?

Why ? You can encode from virtualdub with the version you have, if you just encode and not use any of the new features (which virtualdub doesn't support anyway) then it is backwards compatible, and it even tags video it encodes with the Divx5 FourCC to make sure it is backwards compatible. Some say the recent updates make is superior to Divx5 for quality as well.
Others would recommend you encode with Xvid instead of Divx.Read my blog here.
