    Hi,
Am I safe to assume that the Real media encoder in premiere pro, using the mainconcept codec, is not the same as using the mainconcept encoder?

Basically, my choices are to output to dv avi, then use tmpgenc to encode to burn on dvd, or use the real media encoder and choosing mainconcept , then burn to dvd.

tmpgence can be a bit tad slooooower, but from what I've seen, the quality of the real media encoder isn't the best. I have heard that mainconcept is really good, but that would be its own encoder, not through the real media encoder, correct?

    Thanks!

Totally different encoders and formats. Real Media is for network streaming.

The Adobe Mpeg Encoder (Mainconcept technology) is for MPeg1 and MPeg2 encoding and is built into Premeire Pro.

No need to use TMPGEnc unless you prefer it to Adobe's MPeg encoder implementation of Mainconcept. Mainconcept is used by most pro suites (e.g. Adobe Digital Suite, Vegas, ULead Media Composer, FCP-Luminaire for HD, etc.) because of its SDK, modularity and superiority with interlace MPeg2 encoding. Mainconcept is totally integrated into Premiere and Encore.

In Premiere Mainconcept is called "Adobe MPeg Encoder" and is in the Export Menu. Read the manual if you are confused by the menus. As said above, Real Media is a separate lite version of Real Networks streaming video encoder and is a different thing altogether.

OOPs! I meant to say "adobe media encoder", not "real media encoder" I'm going to be reading the manual (yet again) tonight. Then again, I also don't see adobe MPeg Encoder in the export menu either is this the same as "adobe media encoder"? and just use mainconcept.

But in the end, is the adobe media encoder, using mainconcept comparable to tmpgenc. I ran some quick tests and saw a difference, but it could just mean I have to tweak some stuff.

thanks for all your help, I hope to get out of the newbie stage at one point!

You never identified your version of Premiere Pro. If if says "adobe media encoder" then it must be version2.

All these companies have chosen to license Mainconcept MPeg over TMPGEnc. In summary, Mainconcept better meets the needs of the working professional who edits from reasonable quality source material. Your rankings may differ.
