    this....is very confusing.

About two months ago my niece celebrated her first birthday, and naturally i had my camra for the whole event. i was able to transferr the file of my camra's HD to my desktop in the form of a avi file. it played for about two weeks fine.

just recently i have had issues playing it. it seems as if i restart my pc, i launch the file and the screen remains blank, but the audio plays. i reboot, and it plays fine.

I have tried updating my codec's, that doesn't seem to help. i have tried multipul video players with similar results. its not my video card, as my sons video games play fine.

any ideas as to what the hell is going on?

That could be a problem with your overlay settings. If so, it is the video card. Look in 'Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot.' Lower the hardware acceleration to about 2 marks above 'None' and see what that does. These generally don't change on their own, though.

Depending on your video card, you may also have some 'Video Overlay Settings', that can correct this. And as Balrick mentioned, VLC may work without any changes.
