I got mine yesterday and hopefully I will have time to install it tomorrow (in the same computer as the 5170). Strange that they are releasing it in sweden before the US and the UK (SVP in the UK where I usually order my blank discs still don't have it) but I'm not complaining

Well, if you look for a Sony or Nec with 18x burn speed on dvd-r and dvd+r then you should find it in that case. As far as I know there are only 3 18x drives out there. It's a Plextor, a Samsung and the new Nec/Sony/Optiarc.

Hehe...true. But, I'm not looking for the newest or the fastest burner. I just want one that is reliable and relatively error-free.

    Any advice?

  7. I use an NEC ND-3450A for much of what I burn from PC. No problems. Before that an NEC ND-2500A, also fine but no DL support.

I bought a NEC AD-7173A to replace my 'old' ND-3520A (which went to my daughter's PC) and it worked really fine untill I tried to burn some older DVD's (18 month, printable). I put the disc in the recorder and it blocked the system for some time (ca. 3 minutes), then it gave back 'no disc'. I tried another one (I still have about 50 of this dvd's), but it didn't work. When I tried it with ND-3520A it worked perfectly (at 8x speed).

Next day I tried it again and AD-7173A burnt one of this discs, the second it refused (giving back 'no disc' again after some time).

Is there anybody who can help me? Should I return the AD-7173A or try to get it replaced?

The software used is Nero 7.7.5.1, but I think it's an issue of the burner.
    ... and keep burnin

try using IMGBURN to burn your discs instead of NERO BURN. if the problem still exists then it could your burner dying. what brand of dvd media are you using? use good quality dvd media like TAIYO YUDEN or VERBATIM.

The new NECs and Optiarcs are the same drives/hardware, because Sony+NEC is Optiarc.
