Lately I've started burning a lot of coasters, even though I haven't changed anything that I'm doing or changed any settings. Could it be my media. I'm using, and have been for quite a while with no problems, Sony DVD+Rs. If it is the media then that means that I got two bad batches in a row. Any help is appreciated. Here is the error notification that I got the last time, thanks:

Your burner may have older firmware. Current 16x SONYD21 DVD+R media may be tripping it up.

try using IMGBURN instead of NERO BURN to burn your sony discs. as ls mentioned you may old firmware in your burner. find your dvd burner website and see if they have available newer firmware for your drive.

No new firmware is listed for my device, so I'll try the IMGBURN instead. Thanks for the assist.

Also, how old is the burner? Perhaps you have plain killed it via over-use? In all likelyhood though, even though you have no available firmware update, the burner probably is being 'tripped up' by the new(er) media code. What speed are you attempting to burn the discs at? If 16x, maybe try 12x, or even 8x, to see if it improves your chances at all.

I had (have) a similar situation when I switched from my old Pio DVR 106 and 109's to my current NEC 3550(a)..I generally have used Verbatim 16x -R's since day 1. I can't get a successful burn at 16x in *anything*, either straight .VOBs or in an image, only *sometimes* in IMGburn (VOB/image) [but at max of maybe 12x and only when non DVD Video for some reason]..IMGburn's predecessor DVDDecrypter works fine for me (again at reduced speed, usually 8x), in either VOB or and .ISO...And as for Nero 6.x, I hardly ever fire that up anymore, so I don't recall..

I know all of that probably won't help you much, but I guess my bottom line is this - even though your drive may recognize the media when insterted, and it's rated for 16x writes, you may need to lower your standards, at least for this MID code..It's not likely that 2 batches of anything, except maybe landfill type codes will be bad - and certainly not a quality disc like your average Sony.

I see that you have a TEAC DV-W58E, which is an older drive. One of the problems with the drive makers is that they don't continue to provide firmware updates as dependably as they should on their older models. The problem that this causes is that the drive doesn't recognize newer media. When a type of media isn't recognized by the drive, the drive uses a default write strategy that may or may not work well with that particular type of media. Burners have become so inexpensive that they can almost be viewed as throw-aways. You can get a good drive such as a Pioneer 111 for less that $40 if you shop around. It can save a lot of needless headaches.

Thanks for the info. I need to upgrade anyway, my burner is only 4x, so even when it works fine it's slow. Heck I've wasted over $40 worth of discs fighting with this thing anyway!
