You would have to use Lightscribe compatible media. But there are a few brands out there. It won't do anything with non-Lightscribe media. I assume it will refuse to work, and if it did, it would just wear out the laser with no results.

Looks like Phillips, Verbatim, and HP all make compatible media. Unknown about their quality for DVD burning, though. You should be able to find them at SuperMediaStore, Rima, and Meritline, among others.

We don't read "how it works?" Lightscribe media has a special coating. Plus it has iden info on the inner ring, so I imagine the burner software will tell you "hey buddy, u told me to burn a lightscribe, but I don't see a lightscribe media loaded, u wanna try that again?" and eject the foreign disc.

I've had good luck with the HP LightScribe media. Seems to be of good quality and reasonably priced. Some people have actually had problems with the Verbatim LightScribe DVDs.

I still stick with Verbatim for dual-layer discs. No Lightscribe discs available for dual-layer yet. I've been burning them with Copy To DVD. My Nero 6 seems to burn "quirky" dual-layer disks, even with all updates installed.

There is a download available for darker "printing" on the disks at the expense of the process taking longer. http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=306

I would definately go for the Verbatim over the HP anyday if I were you.

According to the (limited) data in the media section -

Verbatim uses MCC dyes (unsurpisingly since MCC=Verbatim), while the HP uses an MID from CMC Mag..In *non*-lightscribe media, people around these parts almost always agree that MCC is of better quality than CMC, although in defense of CMC plenty of people have absolutely no problems with them at all. I would go for the consistent qulaity (MCC) over price (likely CMC) anyday - esp. if you plan on the media being around for any length of time.
