    Hello:

Can anyone recommend a DVD recorder that supports recording and playback with the closed captions entacted.

I was looking into purchasing one of the following LG LRA750 , Toshiba DR2W, or the JVC DR-M70U, but it is imperative they can record a show which contains CC and playback.

I am in Canada nd my TV supports closed captions, but do any of these players.

The Pioneer DVR-220 and DVR-531 both record and playback closed captions. If you look at the Pioneer operating manuals for both of these recorders closed captions is never mentioned! I only found this out after I purchased the DVR-220 and recorded several TV shows. I'm fairly sure that all of the Pioneer recorders will record closed captions. You can try downloading the operating manuals but this seems to be something that is rarely mentioned. You also have to be careful with DVD authoring software also as some of them will strip the closed captions from the video. I use TMPGENC DVD Author Ver 1.5.15.49 and it keeps the closed captions. Hope this helps.

Haven't used a DVD Recorder, but learned this copying vhs tapes to dvd's.
CC is a function of your TV not the DVD player;which controls subtitles.
CC uses line 21 (Top Field) of the scan for the CC info (at least is USA).
So to record the CC you must record interlaced and top field first.
Also the signal to the TV must be interlaced not progressive. That screwed me up
for a while, had the player set to Progressive.

  4. BobT - can you point me to what needs to be done in TMPGENC DVD Author to keep the CC?

I also use that, but it strips the CC out of the video.

I record off my satellite PVR onto my PC, and can watch captioning as it comes in, but after building DVD files using TMPGENC, they are gone.

I've even built DVD files on my hdd using other software, and been able to see the CC's in it while playing thru PowerDVD, but then if I try to rebuild the DVD files using TMPGENC (to add menu), the CC's are gone.

p.s. I found another posting by you about CCing, and I use just about all the same stuff that you do, except for the capture. I am using an ATI All-in-Wonder Pro, and it shows the CCing and gives options when capturing, to which I've set. Then I use the MPG-VCR to edit, then TMPGENC DVD Author to build the menus and DVD files.

But I felt that the TMPGENC is the problem, especially since I was unable to preserve the CCs from DVD files on my HDD, when rebuilding them using TMPGENC.

FYI, I'm burning using a Pioneer 16x. I have successfully used CloneDVD2 to build DVD files with CCing, and burned using this burner, and viewed CCs on the TV. However, I can't make menus or set my chapters thru CloneDVD2.

  5. All my Panasonics support retaining CC's.

Pioneer is going out of the recorder market. Get a Panasonic.

Far as I know, every dvd recorder supports retaining CCs, except for some Apex dvd players/recorders.

Hi Rediranch, the version of TMPgenc DVD author that I quoted in my previous post will preserve closed captions with the video. Later versions (I have no idea which) they changed, and the program will strip out the closed caption information. You are undoubtedly using a later version of TMPgenc DVD author. The ATI All in wonder series of video cards will display closed captions but they will not record them with the video. It is difficult to find information on this since there does not seem to be much interest. There was a comment about a year ago about the new version of TMPgenc DVD author no longer retained the closed caption information. Try to find any early version of the program, around the Version 1.1.15.49.
