I've found that some DVD players default to subtitles on.
Eventually I found that I can use PGCedit to edit the IFO files and set a default "off" by inserting a "SetSTN=62" command whihc overrides this.
I suspect there is a way to do this within GfD by editing a button function, or perhaps the XML file. Can anyone confirm this?
(There are actions "Set subtitle =0/64/65/66", which look similar.)

Exactly... You can edit the XML and use a command like 'subtitle=62' or 's2=62' to force all subtitles to the 'off' state. The command has to be inserted in the titleset domain (either as < pre > command of the titleset menu or as < pre > command of the title itself). In the mainmenu it has no effect.
