I have an .mpg clip , roughly 68secs. , and I'm looking to take a small tidbit of this clip, and use it for another .mpg project. I know once I have the tidbit , I can paste it back in the newer project ....

My question is , how do I go about selecting the segment? I know this is probably something I'm overlooking, but I simply cannot select/edit/or even work with , the small piece of the 68sec clip.

Please help if you can. Is there something I'm just not doing right?

    Thanks

Open it in virtualdubmod, set the start and end point fo the segment you want to keep, and save it out using either lossless compression or DV (you will need the Panasonic DV codec for this). You can then load this into Vegas.

In Vegas, just highlight the segment you want to isolate. You might get more precision using "mark" (M on keyboard) to define the in and out points, then highlight the area between the mark points and "Render As" MPeg2 (defined by custom settings or defaults) or other format.

There are several ways to do this. Vegas 5 doesn't have a native MPeg project setting so if you want minimal rerendering you need to convert to uncompressed (same is true with VirtualDubMod) or DV format. If the project is set to uncompressed, do the "render as" uncompressed with same settings as chosen project format. When your new project is done, "render as" MPeg2.

Thanks , I will give that a try after work. I've never used VirtualDubMod though , so I'm going to install that as well. Hopefully the learning curve isn't to steep.

    Thanks again!

Installing VirtualDubMod is a good check against Vegas. It allows you to see the pro/con of the similar techniques and gives you a choice depending on what you need to do.
