WMV1 or WMV2 Format?????

Halo,
I had resently just downloaded some movie in .asf format from the net, all lesser than 200mb. I want to convert them to .avi format, and had tried Virtual Dub 1.3c and ASFTools v.2.30 but all did not work.

For Virtual Dub 1.3c when i tried to open the file it will either show a message:
"Couldn't locate for format 'WMV1' (Unkown)"
or
"Couldn't locate for format 'WMV2' (Unkown)"

For ASFTools v.2.30 although it can when through the converting but when i tried to open the finished .asf files it will connect to the microsoft server to get the wmv1 or wmv2 codecs. After i agree for the installation the following message appear:
"A decompressor was downloaded for this file, but it didn't work. You may need to restart your player or browser. (Error=80040200)"
After i follow the instruction and opened the file it only got sound but not pic.

I hope that the kind people in this forum will help me with this problem of mine.ThankS!
