  1. I have an AVI with improper embedded aspect ratio. Is there any tool to change the aspect ratio to a custom value without re-encodding the file? I tried MPEG4 Modifier but it doesn't seem to do anything

When you say doesn't do anything, do you mean that you can open the file, change the AR or that it won't open it at all. MPEG4Modofier changes the PAR info for MPEG-4 Part 2 video streams in avi's. The actual changes are made to the video stream. Nothing to do with avi, so it only works on avi's that contain MPEG-4 Part 2 streams. The other things is that all it does is change a flag. If a player doesn't read said flag, then the changes make no difference.

Still some SAP's do support non 1:1 PAR's and for PC playback it is fine.

mencoder can set AR info at the actual avi container. It is about the only app that supports it though so mplayer is I think the only player that will resize based on it.

  3. Doesn't do anything means the new file is played with WMP exactly the same as the original, no ratio change. Should it change?

WMP isn't a great a player, and ignores many features. Try VLC instead.

  5. I don't think Divx supports the display aspect ratio setting. Make sure you have a recent version of Xvid installed. Older ones didn't support DAR.
