    Hi,

i've been converting uncompressed dv avi files to xvid (thanks to the fact that members of this forum and guides on this forum told me how to do it) and they are all done now. i've saved a LOT of hard drive space.

but, i also have some mpgs that i made ages ago with some really crappy software (power director pro - yes i was new to computers and knew no better). they are pretty big for the length of the videos so i just tried converting one to xvid and the quality was not great.

are mpg2 files already compressed to such an extent that it is not really worth trying to convert them to xvid.

by the way i'm using agk for the compression to xvid.

    cheers

Typically xvid (and divx) can be 1/2 the size (or more) of similar quality mpegs.

  3. If they already look crappy, and are not worth keeping for long time, then reduce file size. If they are family videos, etc, keep the original uncompressed, DV, or MPEG2 files. Just remember, storage space will always be increasing. 13GB/hour for DV storage, will be meaningless in the future, when people have Terabytes of storage.
