Hi,
I just burned my first DVD+R DL. I used HP DVD+R Double Layer. The disc is gold and says "HP Invent" on the surface.
The disc played fine in my PC and in my standalone DVD player. However, when I put the DVD in the PS2, it played for just a few seconds and froze. When I tried to go to the menu, advance one chapter, or press stop, the PS2 said that that particular function wasn't supported. The PS2 tells me that the disc has no menu, but it has a menu that functioned perfectly on the PC and the DVD player.
I was able to advance to the main title, using the GoTo function (which was the only navigation function that seemed to work), but I only get to see a few seconds. The video appears to be moving at double speed, and after a few seconds, the picture freezes. All controls are then disabled, as was the case above when the opening titles were playing.
My PS2 is an old-style model, not the slim, vertical model. The specs are as follows:
Console SCPH-50001
Browser 1.40
CD Player 2.00
PlayStation Driver 1.11
DVD Player 3.02U
Any ideas?
(By the way, is there any difference between "dual layer" and "double layer" discs?)
Any feedback would be appreciated.

ONLY USE VERBATIM +DL MEDIA (most reliable at this time)

As Denvers Dawgs says the "word on the street" is that Verbatim DVD+R DL discs are the only brand worth buying ... at least when it comes to DVD+R DL discs.
This is based on a lot of data from forum users although I must say that I have yet to attempt to burn a DVD+R DL disc myself.
Also it probably would be best to use ImgBurn as your burning program. My understanding is that it is the best burner software for DL discs. I know it sure is the best for SL discs.

P.S.
It is well known that the quality of the DVD recordable disc makes a big difference in terms of playback. The better the quality of the DVD recordable disc the better your chances of it playing properly over a wide range of DVD hardware players. It is also well known that the program you use for burning has the same affect. This applies to single layer and dual layer discs.
Dual Layer and Double Layer are the same thing although the more accepted term to use is Dual instead of Double."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Thank you very much for the replies.
Is it OK to burn DL discs in Video mode, just as you would burn a SL? I see a lot of guides online in which the authors recommend creating image files. Any thoughts? -
Agree!!
Verbatim +R only for double layer recordable media.
ISO read ISO write is the best method.
Also what type of burner are you using ?
Are you bitsetting, changing the booktype to DVD-ROM ?
Doing this will make them more compatible with standalone players.

PS2 are VERY picky about media, burning method, and authoring method.
Never tried a DL disk but I found that ALL disks authored with DVD-Lab failed. Several other methods yielded a disk wherein the first title played with no sound, second title played fine.
Seems to like Fuji and TDK disks, authored with GFD, burned with Ulead. Actual burning progs seems less critical than disk and authoring software.
There is also significant variability from model to model, according to what I have read. -

I do have some that were burned with ImgBurn but authored with DVD-Lab Pro ... never tried one of those in my PS2 (rarely do I use it as a DVD player) so I'll have to try and see how that goes.

Is DVD Decrypter (I never installed IMGBurn...any cool new features besides building an ISO?) fine for burning DL?
