  1. Hi,does anyone know if there are currently any DVD players on the market that will play PAL discs on an NTSC TV,and is also hackable to be region-free?
I have a $50 Magnavox MDV455 at the moment which does both (via the menu options, and hack respectively) and does the job well ,but I want to buy another one that does the same(not neccessarily same model).
I don't think the MDV455 is still available,do you know if any of the current Magnavox models do this,or any other inexpensive players?

    Thanks.

    Philips DVP-5140 (about $55.00 at Wal-Mart)

Philips DVP-5960 (about $80.00 at a variety of retail stores such as Circuit City)

    Oppo Digital DV-970HD ($149.00 direct from http://www.oppodigital.com/)

    Oppo Digital OPDV971H ($199.00 direct from http://www.oppodigital.com/)

Of all of these the Oppo Digital OPDV971H will give you the best quality when it comes to PAL to NTSC conversion.

    P.S.
The Philips models above do not support DTS. The Oppo Digital models however both support DTS. Another option if you want DTS is the Pioneer DV-393-S which does PAL to NTSC and can be made region free but you have to buy it pre-modified to be region free. The cost of that unit is $109.00 making it the cheapest of the bunch that does DTS but is region free and does PAL to NTSC. You can get the region free version at 220-Electronics.com
