  1. Hi.... I wonder if anyone can help with this odd kind of problem I have with WMP.

Whenever I try to play avi's or mpgs (regardless of codec) it plays the file fine, but I cannot skip ahead or back without it playing the file from the very start..... it also doesn't show the progress on the bar along the bottom as it plays (as if it were not playing).

If I stop play, and then press play again, the same thing happens, if I stop and then play again, it plays it as it should, and the progress bar is useable again to skip ahead or back. So only on the third time I play the file will it allow me to do this.

wmv files play fine and do not have this problem, only with avi and mpg.

Does anyone know what the problem is likely to be?

    Thanks very much.

  2. Thanks.. I have other players, but it's only recently started doing this, I was hoping someone might know why.

It's possible it's to do with codecs since I recently re-installed some.

At the moment I'm getting the DivX icon in the taskbar when I play a file in WMP..... So I'm guessing it's using Divx as the codec, is there a way of choosing another codec as default or something, I never used to get the DivX icon pop up.

If it happens with files with all different codecs, then it sounds like the player is the problem. If you added some codecs by way of a codec pack, then that may have caused the problem. If you suspect codecs, try Codec Sniper and see if any are corrupted or duplicated. Gspot 2.60 may also tell you if you have more than one codec for the same type of file.

If you are playing a Divx file, you will need a Divx or Xvid codec.

I had this problem with some of my movies. The biggest upset was "Ancient Secrets of the Kamasutra". I have this movie as a AVI file on regular CD-R and I was really mad that I coudn't get to spicy moments. I simply copied this movie to my HDD and it plays on the same WMP without any problems. In some cases this may not fix the problem and than a file must be encoded once again. Just open the AVI or MPG file in TMPGEnc and try first DIRECT STREAM COPY. If this doesn't help complete encoding is required. This is quite simple error which is happenning during a recording process.
