The DVD read/write works fine. However, it won't recognize any CD's (including CD-R blanks). It tries to spin up, then something "scratches", then it spins down, and up and down... Then it quits about 20 seconds later.

Is this drive pretty much toast? (Kaput, finito, whatever?)

Sounds like the drive is going through a slow death. If you're looking for a replacement drive Best Buy has the Pioneer 710 (retail 111D) drive on sale this week for $49.99.

That sounds like a decent deal. I'm not really interested in DVD-RAM compatibility any way, and most of the good cheap drives at Newegg seems to be DVD-RAM compatible as well.

Just bought it, will install it soon. Wish me luck!

(Incidentally, it's weird that ALL 6 of the packages have that seal sticker broken.)

If want to crossflash the drive to the 111L test the drive out with the original firmware by doing some burns first since the box seals were broken. To crossflash to 111L drive just use the dangerous brothers firmware 111L 8.19* internal firmware then use 111L 8.26 internal firmware. That will enable bitsetting to dvd-rom for single layer dvd media, labelflash and dvd-ram. Bitsetting to dual layer media is already defaulted by Pioneer which means you don't need the hacked firmware to achieve it.

Seems okay, drive looks new, alreayd have black face plate.

I guess I should have removed the old device in device manager, then shut down, then replaced the drive, since after I replaced the drive my windows won't boot up. I had to use the Ultimate Boot CD to fix the darn thing. :P Now it's working, finally... I'm packing up the old drive and sending it back to AOpen and see what they say...

  7. Most likely the CD laser has died. It is seperate from the DVD laser. Not unusual for either function to die and leave the other one OK.
