Warner Brothers is undergoing development of a single-disc Blu-ray, HD-DVD and DVD [or CD] hybrid. Designed by top Warner engineers Alan Bell and Lewis Ostrover, the new hybrid disc works by stacking a Blu-ray layer on top of an HD-DVD layer. As both Blu-ray and HD-DVD use a blue laser with a 405-nanometer wavelength to read data, information for each format can be stored in the same medium. However, because Blu-ray data resides 0.1 nanometers beneath the disk surface and HD-DVD data is written at 0.6 nanometers deep, the two types of data can co-exist on the same side of a disc without interference.
A patent on the technology was filed on August 10th of 2006.

I think this is Warner's way of killing Blu-Ray ... they offer all their movies this way so Blu-Ray only people can enjoy them (like those that buy a PS3 for instance) but everyone else will be like ... why buy an expensive Blu-Ray machine when the movie is available in HD-DVD and the hardware is cheaper.
If you ask me this gives the advantage to the HD-DVD camp instead of the Blu-Ray camp.

PS3 is projected to sold at $500, and has blu-ray. Won't that make blu-ray and HD-DVD cost about the same ?
Samsung, panasonic, and Sony all have $1000 blu-ray player now. They should have a plan to move to PS3 price point. -

The real question remains ... will people buying a PS3 for games also use it for Blu-Ray movie discs and if so will that keep them from buying HD-DVD hardware? If they do buy Blu-Ray movie discs and refuse to buy HD-DVD hardware then will there be enough PS3 Blu-Ray only hardware people that it will "kill" HD-DVD hardware/software? Time will tell ...

But with universal discs it doesn't really matter. The money for the HD-DVD or Blu-ray camps is not really in the players it's in the licensing of the films. With a universal disc, both camps win but the consumer loses because multiple licenses and the added production cost will undoubedly raise the retail cost. Consumers have to pay for two versions when they not only just want one, but in most cases they wouldn't even care which one they got just so long as it played.
I think that universal discs are not the answer. The only thing that's going to make these formats viable for the average Joe are universal players. -

I do see your point ... also another thing that I thought of before but didn't bring up ... no multiple layers of the same data. In other words, as I read it, you can't have 2 layers of Blu-Ray, 2 layers of HD-DVD etc.
A single HD-DVD can be dual layer though and this is true of Blu-Ray so ...
The all-in-one disc may not be "enough" space since it seems each format is limited to a single layer.
