    hi,

i have trobule with ripping dvds with handbrake and/or mac the ripper.
handbrake works fine with most of the region 3 dvds that i own,
but more than half of region 1 dvds i can't rip.
mac the ripper claims they have bad sectors, while handbrake won't recognize their video folders.
    what would be the cause??

    thanks in advance.

I suspect you're using the free MTR 2.6.6, which doesn't
play nice with the newer protection schemes. You need
the donationware MTR of the 3.0 persuasion. Go to

    http://www.mactheripper.org/

and join the forum to see how to get the latest beta, which
does a real nice job on the more recalcitrant DVDs.

is it possible that it has to do with the region set in my dvd drive as default?
i set it up for region 3, which i often view... i can rip region 3 dvds fine...
do i need to hack my dvd player installed in my mac?

Depending on what drive you have, you may be able to
flash its firmware to region-free status. Check rcp1.org.
    Lots of goodies there.

Then you can use RegionX (macupdate.com) to reset the
number of region changes you've made.

I have powerbook g4 (Matshita?). i looked it up, and it doesn't appear that i can hack it. maybe, i should buy an external drvie, then make that drive region free...everyone seems to recommend pioneer dvd 110d...

i'm new to this, and thanks for your help!

I suggested that site and drive to some people over at ripdifferent and tigerdirect sent them 111-D instead so be careful.
