  1. As I work on more and more DVDs, with an ever-growing variety of software, my HD is getting sprinkled with folders all identically named VIDEO_TS, and their VOB files all have an identical series of names. Can I safely rename
    - the subfolders
    - the VOB files
    more meaningfully please?

Not if you intend on using them as DVD videos. Just create each in its own specially named folder, such as

    SPECIAL FOLDER > VIDEO_TS > VIDEO_TS.VOB
    ICBM target coordinates:
    26° 14' 10.16"N -- 80° 16' 0.91"W

  3. Thanks. I'm doing that, but the snag is that when I import a folder or VOB files into say NeroVision Express (in order to make a new DVD or modify a menu etc), there is no clear way of distinguishing between several identically-named resources.
