More expensive than normal, therefore less demand.
Lack of sales, if it's really discontinued.

    A shame, really.

I was lucky enough to pick up two 5 packs at circuit city on clearance a while back. I paid just a bit over $20 for both (if I remember right), including tax.
Haven't put them to use yet since I only have ten. I wish I could find more, especially at that price.

The Verbatim "VideoGard Protection" discs are the same concept.

.... and no, VideoGard is not misspelled.

And Maxell "Broadcast Quality" DVD-R has hardcoating on them too, if you want to pay $2 each for them (though you do get standard DVD cases with them).

Perhaps the most laughable attempt at scratch-resistant coating is by "Scratch-Less". They go through all the trouble to put the hardcoat on the disc plus put little raised bumps around the edge of the disc to keep the disc from coming in contact with a flat surface...but who do they choose to manufacture these uniquely durable discs? Instead of picking a high quality production plant, they pick none other than CMC!
