He only had a 26" TV Toshiba for a long time. We both purchase the same demo model on the same day at a big sales event. The TVs were purchased in 1988, and mine just quit in March. They were very good TVs for the time.

Many people don't care much about picture quality. We here at Videohelp are Vidiophiles for the most part, and we don't understand how a bad low quality picture is even worth watching.

  2. I generally agree with Lordsmurf, my lifetime (I am 53) experience has led me to have nothing made by SONY in my home, its too bespoke, too fussy, hail Toshiba, now their stuff has always worked well for me.

Toshiba is all the quality without the high price. The only Sony I purchases are walkman type devices. They make the smallest and the best, but they keep getting crappier. The AM radio in walkmans are so bad, they hardly bring in a station when standing next to the transmitter. (I am hooked on talk radio, hence the AM).

  4. It's interesting to read people extolling the virtues of Toshiba when they made the worst "brand name" DVD players on the market. They wouldn't play VCD's, SVCDs or home burnt DVDRs and cost a fortune. No bugger that! Most Sony gear is absolutely fine (although somewhat overpriced), other noteworthy manufacturers would be JVC/Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung and Hitachi.

And the earlier quote about Beta, well virtually all TV stations around the world use DigiBeta as a standard aquisition and playout format, with most machines being sourced from Sony.

"They wouldn't play VCD's, SVCDs or home burnt DVDRs and cost a fortune" is a very accurate description of Sony DVD players. The long line of people returning Sony players after Xmas, for many years, is the best evident.

IBM is still a mainframe vender, but they concede the disk drive, the desktop, and the laptop markets that IBM invented, to companies that do bussiness. If Sony can't compete in the hottest market, then how good can Sony be ?

This is consumer expereince on a Sony VHS VCR(This is liked DOS on Mac):

Saying that they don't play "home burnt DVDRs" is just not true. I play my DVDRs all the time (including just last night) on the oldest Tosihiba DVD player that was made. I bought it the first week when DVD titles were available many years ago. It has worked better than all my other video equipment since then. I have had 3 Toshiba TVs, one of which just stopped working, which I purchased as a demo model in 1988. That's almost a 20 year life span for a video product, let that high priced Sony try to equal that. I also purchased a 35" demo model, which had a bad picture tube, and Toshiba replaced it for free at my home. Do you think that Sony would have done that? Toshiba has the quality, and customer service without having to pay a high price for the letters SONY being on the box.

Also, I remember I read many years ago, that many of the DVD players sold on the market were actually manufactured by Toshiba, and sold under the other companies' names.
