I have which I believe to currently be an MPEG 2 file, which prior to that was a vob file in the video-TS folder which was copied directly over to the hard drive from a dvd.The possibility exists that the video file under discussion is still a vob file as,I'm not absolutely 100% sure.My express mission is to get it from it's present compressed,dvd-compliant state to its full original quality, completely uncompressed as an avi file. From there I will re-edit and process it with Adobe Premiere.
Please, how do I best accomplish this?
Conversion quality is very important to me and am trying to get as little quality loss as humanly possible.
I hope the above wasn't confusing.
All tips, reccommendations, suggestions, personal experiences and input welcomed.
Thanks!
The Newbie (but not forever with your help thankfully)

Use VirtualDub to re-encode it to Huffy avi codec. Premiere Handles the huffy codec really well and its a lossless codec too.
Carefull tho it creates a very large file. -
virtualdubmod/virtualdubmpeg2 will open mpeg or vob files and output using any lossless codec you have installed. Lagarith, Huffyuv or MSU are all good choices. These will be smaller than an uncompressed avi, yet be the same quality as the mpeg. I am assuming that is what you meant when you said
to its full original qualityRead my blog here.
