I just captured my first VHS to mpg file using my camcorder pass-through function. I burned it to a DVD compatible mpg2 file using the nero template. I was surprised that the resulting file was 6+ gigs. Shouldn't it by default be no more than 4.7 gigs since that's the standard size of a single layer DVD and it's only 2 hours long? Does source/quality drive the size of the file?

If you captured to mpg, make sure you capture to dvd specifications mpg. Then just author with an authoring app that doesn't reencode, like TDA or DVDAuthorGUI.

Right which I did but what I am surprised at is that the DVD MPG spec template produced a two hour video that is 6+ gigs. Shouldn't it automatically come out at 4.7 or less (the size of a single layer dvd?)

What Nero does or doesn't do is a complete mystery at best.
If your mpg is X GB, your DVD should come out as X GB too (+ a little overhead, depending on menus and stuff).

Which part of Nero did you use ?

If you have an authored DVD and use the burning rom component, it will retain the size. If you use NeroVision to author, it will, in almost all cases, re-encode for it's own reasons, regardless of compliance of the source. You will lose control over size and quality, and get the sort of results you are seeing.

Do yourself a favour - use Nero for nothing but writing to discs, and even then, restrict it to CDs and single layer DVDs. Nothing else in the Nero suite does what it should particularly well.
