  1. I'm trying to convert an mpeg2 file into xvid but the output file produces some artifacts. I've made a 2 pass xvid output file and set the bitrate to 1000kbps. But the result is that during scenes of solid colors like the sky it produces line artifacts.

    Examples of what I mean:

how can I fix this? any suggestions

What did you grab these stills with ?

Xvid/Divx etc at that sort of bitrate does have problems with large areas with little or subtle tonal variations, while being able to produce pretty good detail on patterned and busy surfaces. I don't understand enough about the algorythm to say why, but it is common to all encodes I have seen.

That said, it could also be produced by watching it with software that is down converting the colour depth to 16bit for display as well, hence my first question.

  3. Use more bitrate. Or better yet, forget bitrate and use constant quality (constant quantizer) encoding with Q=2.

it may also be in the source files and you may have to apply smoothing to those scenes - or block reduction and/or dithering
