    Hi,

I've been struggling capturing subtitles for years. If any of you can help me with this, I would be forever grateful.

Ok, here is how I do.
    (i) i rip a dvd with Mac the Ripper (not as separate streams)
(ii) use Mpeg Streamclip to edit
(iii) save them on my computer as quick movie file.

Subtitles won't appear, and since my job has to do with foreign films, it is cruicial to have them on the clips. Some suggested to demux/mux them, but I'm not familiar with the softwares to do that.
Some also suggested to use either Cinematize and Snapz, but I tried out Cinematize, and you can choose subtitle but then I get three different files; .mov file, audio .aif, and .sub files. How can I put the three together? Further when you edit with Cinematize (unlike Mpeg Streamclip) you don't hear sound...which is rather inconvenient. Has anyone tried out Snapz??

    Thanks in advnace!!

Try Handbrake. It will embed the subtitle as it rips from the DVD.

    thanks!
it works great, but then i was unable to trim it with mpeg streamclip, since it can't read mp4 file.
i can import it via i-movie, but then the aspect ratio gets changed, and it all looks stretched. any suggestions? thanks!

Import it into an iMovie project that's the proper proportion (4:3 or 16:9). Even if that doesn't work, you can drop the reference movie (found inside the project package - right-click on the iMovie project, select "show package contents", and then look for the reference movie which is probably inside an iDVD folder within the project) onto MPEG Streamclip and, when you save as "whatever format", you'll have the opportunity to alter the pixel size back to the proper proportions.

Why use the reference movie? So you don't have to export from iMovie and take extra time and space.

Let us know how it goes.

stupid me. i just upgraded mpeg streamclip (to version 1.7), which does read mp4 and should be able to edit/convert/etc. so i don't have to import a clip to i-movie to edit.

thank you sooooooo much. i've been struggling with this for so long ^^.
