I have some video files that are actually saved into a .divx file. I want to at the very least convert them to an avi and then into an xvid avi. My problem is the only software I know that will do that is virtual dub and that would take forever (about 50 files) to do one at a time. Any ideas? Freeware is best.

Have you just tried rename the .divx to .avi? it usually works fine.

    But why convert to xvid?

IMO you are wasting your time, you convert to xvid and you will lose quality. If you must convert though try AutoGK, it's very easy to use and it's free.

No need to convert. As said renaming should work since the divx media format is an extension/hack of avi and is supposed to be fully backwards compatible. Simply remuxing with a tool such as VDub that doesn't support the divx extensions should give you a true avi and if you want XviD, just change the fourCC from DX50 to XVID.

If you need to rename a bunch of file extensions, something like this may work faster than doing them one at a time: http://sourceforge.net/projects/file-folder-ren
