Hello,
I'm just got a new pioneer dvd burner. I'm trying to burn some mpg files with dvd it and adobe premiere pro. The problem seems to be when i go to burn it takes forever just to transcode. Is it something to do with how i encoded the video. I've captured it from ati mmc using a radeon 9600xt aiw. I currently have the following specs in my machine:
amd athlon xp 2500
512mb dual channel ddr ram
does anyone know why it takes so long to burn? is there any way to encode a dvd without having to transcode?
Thanks

Start by look at What is DVD (top left corner of this page) to see what is compliant in the DVD spec. Learn this off by heart.
When converting directly to mpeg2, make sure you use compliant resolutions and bitrates for your chosen format.
You can see what you current video looks like by using the latest versionof g-spot (2.60beta, I believe). If your video doesn't comply, it will be re-encoded, which can take some time.
There are other things you may be able to do speed this up a little, however getting it right in the first place is by far the best option.Read my blog here.

Well i've continued to have no luck. G spot said it didn't support mpg Is it something to do with ati aiw mmc setup? are there any ati aiw mmc users who can lend advice? i know that there are some people who really don't likee mcc are there alternatives to use with my aiw card?

You need a newer version of Gspot to check MPEGs, 2.52 or the newest 2.60. Just as guns1inger said, the video has to be DVD compliant no matter what program you use to capture it.
If you need ATI capture advice, go to lordsmurf's site: http://digitalfaq.com/ -
well i think i've disovered the problem why it takes so long. Demuxing. What can I do to avoid having to demux. It there some little twek i need to do to ati aiw?

AVICodec is probably the most used program I have. After you install this little program you can 'right click' on about any video or audio file you have, choose AVICodec, then view all the information you need to know. Works with Mpeg, Avi, mp3, wma, etc etc.
MMC has a few items that can mess you up if you let it.
Select it's "DVD High" preset then 'edit'. Make sure "format" is set to MPEG-2DVD. Set "Resolution" to either (I'm in the USA) 704x480 or 720x480 (whichever you want). UNCheck Inverse 3:2 pulldown unless you are capturing from tape or film and this helps it. Check Record Cropped Video. For Cropped video to work properly you must have "Crop Video" checked on MMC's Display Tab, and you must choose either MPEG-2DVD or MPEG-1VCD or MPEG-2SVCD set as the format type or MMC will output a non-standard video size that will be non DVD compliant. Set Audio to 48K. Closed Group Of Pictures. Varable bitrate - I've found I can use up to 9590 for the max number and all of my programs will except the files no problem. I usually set the average number equal to or no more than 1.0Mbps lower (usually <500kbps lower). This depends on my source. Motion - 100% if your CPU can handle it. Audio bitrate - 256K. Soap - Light. #1 COMBO 1 -- 3 to 8%. #2 Sharpen -- 3 to 8%. Too much soap washes away all the detail I think. A little goes a long way. Keep it low.
My 2hr preset is the above setting with 9590 max and 9540 average. My source is satellite and all my cables are huge and gold plated and I use S-Video input and the signal is very clean. My 3.0G P4 runs about 19-21% CPU load with these settings with my ATI AIW 9800Pro card. I use MMC 9.03 and Cat 4.12. I drop no frames. For slow-dark movies I get more time than 2 hours with these setting. Bright active movies I'm pushing it to get 2 hours.
My 1hr preset is the above settings with a Constant Bitrate of 9590. This gives excellent video quality. My version of Tmpgenc DvdAuthor will except up to 9590 without complaining when using 256K audio.
Make sure TV on Demand (TOD) is not active.
Good luck. -
okay i've got another quick question for you. It has nothing to do with transcoding.
When I try to burn a dvd iso in nero it only burns the disks at 12x i have 16x dvd+r and the drive is supposed to burn at 16x what's up? -
The Pioneer will not burn the disc faster than it thinks it should be burned. Buy a better grade of disc. Generally what I've seen is that Made in Japan and Verbatim will burn at 16X for a 16X disc. Made in Taiwan 16X Ritek, CMC, Prodisc etc. Will burn at 12X.
Feed it Verbatim or Fuji or Maxell 16X and it should burn at 16X. -
Every burner has write strategies pre-programmed into it for a range of discs, and a fall back for unknown discs. The fall back is generally slower than the fastest discs around. If it does not have an explicit write strategy for disc you are using, you most likely won't get full speed from them.

What kind of disk do you all reccomend? I have an uncle who burns about 700 dvds a year and he swears by dvd-r. Previously I had a liteon drive and have only purchased dvd+r disks. So what do you all reccomend?

Hey i've got a question about tmpeng dvd author. When I burn a disk and play the disk never do i see the main menu it just starts playing the disk. I've set the first play action main menu and still no luck. Any Ideas?
-
Have you tried:
From the "Create Menu" screen - "Display Menu Setting" - "General Tab" - "This has greater priority than action to take after all tracks have been played" This is the top (first) action I believe....
Also check next box: Action to take after all tracks have been played.
I usually set all of them to Display Main Menu. That way the first play is the main menu then the menu returns after each track.
Good luck. -
Here's what I did. I told it to include the main menu and the chapter menu. I finally got it to work.
