This may be a stupid question, but my friend has the JVC GR-HD1 and I noticed it allows you to shoot video in HD, SD, or DV. What is the difference between SD and DV? I thought they are the same thing. Thanks.

  2. According to the information at B&H Photo:

In other words, HD and SD are both MPEG2. What's odd is that it can record widescreen in SD MPEG2 but not DV! I have a DV camcorder that records native widescreen. The other difference is that the SD mode records in progressive scan, whereas the DV is interlaced (again, odd, since other DV camcorders exist that do progressive scan).

Personally, I would choose the DV over the SD since DV is better suited for editing. (Actually, I wouldn't even use the HD, which should be called HDV. Real HD is different.)

I thought SD was simply uncompressed standard definition video..Usually requiring an interface card with SDI connectors to be able to capture the information...
That being said, i was under the impression SD was what broadcast folk to transfer beta to computer with 4:2:2 colour sampling...
And that DV was a compressed version if SD with 4:1:1 sampling...
And that HDV was Mpeg based stream with the same bitrate as DV, to facilitate filesize...

    Just a guess though...

B&H is about as unreliable as they come, for information.

They still think a Canopus DV box is a TBC!

SDI is uncompressed serial digital 4:2:2 normally at 270Mb/s 720x480/576 (SMPTE 259m/c) but other variations exist for sqaure pixel 16:9 and HDTV 16:9.

The JVC consumer HD camera will not support SDI in any form.

Here is the spec sheet showing shooting modes
    http://www.jvc.com/promotions/grhd1/spec/spec.html

    Component analog outputs are
    480p / 59.94, 480i / 29.97
    720p / 60 fps HD only
    1080i / 30 fps

    The 1080i output is scaled from 720p, 480p, 480i

  6. See http://www.jvc.com/promotions/grhd1/unprecedent/s_right.html - scroll down to the table that shows all the formats.

Basically supports what the B&H blurb says.

Still don't get the widescreen only being available on the MPEG2 channel, though.
