In the last four weeks I am unable to play my mpeg files (family cideos) with either Windows Mediaplayer 10, or Realplayer or Winamp. If I right-click on the mpeg file, and select play wtih e.g. Mediaplayer, the program opens, but a black screen remains within the main Mediaplayer window, and you do not see any image or hear any sound. I have been watching these mpeg files for years, and I never had this problem before. I am using the same computer. I tried to reinstall Windows Mediaplayer as well as Realplayer, even rebooted the comp to no avail. Surprisingly however, PowerDVD does play the file. I Googled the topic, but nothing helpful came up. The only thing which a couple of months ago I did was to install several trial mpeg cutter/editor/joiner programs, which subsequently I uninstalled. I am wondering whether that had anything to do with this problem. I would appreciate any help. Thanking you.

I'm sure that the unistallation of your mpeg editors have had an effect on your computer. What possibly has happened is that your mpeg decoders have become de-registered. An easy way to find out is to install another mpeg decoder such as Dscaler. The harder way is to re-install your windows default decoders. If it comes down to that, myself or someone else here will post instructions.
Look in "tools" in the menu to the left, search under mpeg decoders and there are a few options.
Good luck. -
Sorry to hear that you are still having trouble, I haven't seen that warning screen before and think that cancelling the installation was a wise idea.
You could try to re-register direct-x (learn here)
You could also re-install your default codecs (learn here)
Another Mpeg2 decoder other then dscaler, here
Also Mpeg files can have different audio file types, you may need ac3 decompressor, you can download it here but be sure to read the webpage carefully to fully understand how to install it.
Finally, after a quick search of these forums turned up that installing powerdvd or cyberlink can sometimes damage WMP to play back mpeg / dvd files. Most are resulving there problems with a patch / update for these players
