I wanted to see what people consider the "routine" codec set up when setting up a new machine.

I would need a good codec for both mpg2 and .avi files (encoding & decoding both)

there are 55 types of avi files more or less - which do you mean ?

you will need a mpeg2 codec, an ac3 codec and ffdshow and/or xvid codec, a DV codec ......

about it for 90% of most people .... really depends what you want to encode and decode

Do not do a codec pack unless you want to re-format and start over again.

K-Lite is a pretty decent codec pack.

Despite the name, CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) is not actually a codec pack but a set of filters/custom ffdshow build. http://www.cccp-project.net/

There is even a tool which helps with cleaning up messes left by old installations of other codecs.

It allows plenty of control over what you want installed, and provides a control panel for easily registering and unregistering specific filters in ffdshow (AAC, AC3, MP3, AVC, divx/xvid, etc...)

I personaly use it, along with some other codec/filters for playback (mainly CoreAVC Standard and AC3filter). Despite the fact that it seems to have been devolped for the anime fansub community, I have found it to be a good, simple all around solution that provides easy managment of filters.
