I just purchased the last drx Sony 810 ul which has both firewire and usb2. We have a BenQ 1621 that is still operating great with its Book Management exe. for writing in DVD ROM and thus no coasters for our huge family with diverse vintage and door crasher specials to home theatre brands of stand alone players.

We need to get another external burner and know that Sony has a new 820 U out now that is only usb as is our BenQ. In talking to Sony Tech support they said to only use Sony, TDK or Verbatim R+ and not Maxell, Fuji, Kodak or Memorex R+ as there is a problem with the dye in these discs in the Sony's. We don't have to worry about that with our BenQ burner at all.

We want to be able to Burn DVD ROM automatically as we do with the BenQ and keep everyone in the family happy as we transfer from our mini dv to DVD as presents.

Can anyone advise what is the BEST automatic bitsetting dvd burner to burn in DVD ROM like the BenQ which is a dead breed here in Canada after Lite On took over the Optical Drives and are we correct in the purchase of the Sony 810 UL which I googled all over for and found the last one in the Future Shop here in Canada.
We have not tried it yet and have 15 days to return it which means 2 weeks as of tomorrow. The Sony Tech support that I called claim that it does automatic bit setting.

I would appreciate comments as soon as possible as we need to get this third burner and know even if we were able to find a BenQ that the firmware support of recent date is not good as my brother has a 1650.

He is experiencing issues with it unlike his 162I, the same BenQ that we have.

We would really appreciate comments, as when you go to the stores the sales reps don't even know what bit setting is and we want it to be automatic for DVD ROM burning.

Thankyou and we really look forward to your responses as I have to buy another burner in the next 2 days and we also wonder if the Sony 810 UL is auto bit setting, if it is not we have time to return it without a penalty.

    Thankyou and best regards.

If I'm not mistaken the SONY 810 UL is a rebadged BENQ 1640 drive. Check with the BENQ FORUM at CdFreaks.com. If it is then you'll have no problem with bitsetting to dvd-rom for dvd+r media. Like the 1620 it has bitsetting to dvd-rom set without any hacked firmware. You'll probably be able to crossflash that SONY 810UL to the official BENQ 1640 firmware as well. If you crossflash the SONY 810UL you will be able to use QSUITE 2.1 which is a tool that can remember write strategies for different brands of media. There's also booktyping to dvd-rom for dvd+rw with QSUITE. Check out the BENQ FORUM.

    Here's what I found at the Cdfreaks.com:
