Ok I have become a noob again for this topic. I have to admit that I have only burned DL Video DVD backups which worked perfectly.

Now I want to put some divx (avi) created from some of my favorite dvd's so I can play them on the dvp-642. I have often done this on sl discs but I am concerned about the layer breaks.

I picked up some discs at Best Buy, a 10 pack for $12.99 can. They are the same type that I used for the Video DVDs so I know they will work with the dvp-642.

I don't want to have issues with a long pause at the layer break in the middle of a movie.

To anyone who's done this: is there anything to be concerned about.

Any help would be appreciated. It might save me a few $ in wasted discs.

btw) If this has been well covered somewhere and I missed it in my search, please provide the links.

The layer change shouldn't be any different then playing any other disc.

It's an issue when burning DL DVD video.

What I need to know is if it's a problem when burning avi (divx) on DL dvd for use on a divx player. Only those who have done it would know the answer so I am appealing to them before I plunge into it on my own.

It is a completely different issue to buring DVD Video, where the layer break position is constrained by cell boundaries at certain positions.

You are burning a data disc, where cells etc don't exist, although the constraints on size still do. I would start by using imgburn2 and see where it thinks the layer break should be. If you want to get a better answer, try posting here http://forum.imgburn.com/ and see what you get back.

    @gunslinger

I don't usually create image files. With sl discs I just drag and drop and burn a data disc with Nero. When I test the first disc I will probably burn it as I usually do with sl discs and will use udf 1.02 and bitset it to dvd-rom. When the layer breaks it will likely be while a video is playing so I was wondering if anyone had actually burned any and checked the results to see if there is any pause or anything. That's all I'm really concerned about. Also how the dvp-642 handles DL discs with avi. I know it works with dvd video because I've done that.

Thanks for commenting. I'll keep imgburn2 as option 2 if my method fails.

I know my question is very specific (divx avi on a DL disc for use on the dvp-642).

To test it myself I will have to choose my avi files carefully. I know the dvp-642 won't read past the 2gb barrier and I want the layer break to be in the 3rd file so that I can play it right though and check for any problems. I'll pick 4 files under 2 gb and a 5th smaller one to fill the disc to about 8.2 gb. The files are usually read alphabetically by the dvp-642 and I'm hoping that is how they are written on the disc. I should be able to estimate where this break is going to happen fairly accurately if that's the case.

With all the divx player owners around here I would have thought that someone has tried this before so I was hoping to save myself some trial and error.

imgburn2 can burn folders of files, not just images. A quick search through the imgburn forums found this

    http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=2040&hl=dual+layer+data

Which says it can be done, although I haven't found a post from anyone who says they have, or how successful it was.

Thanks for that link it doesn't answer everything but it seems to confirm what I had hoped.

I wasn't aware of the file feature of that prog. I pretty much use Nero all the time now since I took Roxio off my PC a while back. Some people hate one or the other but both worked for me but not together. Nero just seemed more straight forward for me and I never had any real issues with it like some others have had.

I've got a dvd to avi conversion going on right now which is what has stopped me from making my first test. I still need a couple of good files to make sure I only use simple profile divx acceptable to my standalone Philips.

I should be ready in a day or so. I'll give IMGBURN2 a try.

Thanks, I appreciate your spending the time looking that up for me. All the searches I did were on VH. I think I'll broaden the scope now.
